hand still hurts! probably surgery in my future, alas. i hope i can get it done quickly; i'd like to be recovered by the end of the year. this has really thrown my last quarter in disarray...

in other news i've still been spending time in the diadem, because i like pain i guess. i only have... 88,000 more grade 3 materials to gather before i can work on the actual main achievement. give me strength. the only other ffxiv news is that i'm making good progress on my cosmic points; i'm nearly at 500k in the three gatherers thanks to red alerts. i've really been trying to finish the gatherer point grind as quickly as i can because i know it'll be way more tedious once people stop pinging red alerts...

in reading news, i read Valerie Valdes's Where Peace is Lost the other night and really enjoyed it! nothing groundbreaking in terms of plot, but i thought the worldbuilding was really neat and the characters were delightful. i've lined up a bunch of sci fi books to read next; currently reading Megan E. O'Keefe's The Two Lies of Faven Sythe which has likewise had fascinating worldbuilding. hoping to find more contemporary sci fi i love; i'm very open to recommendations.

nothing much else this week, tbh. the hand thing scuttled a lot of my plans. i need to get working on my ardbert site, though, so hopefully i can focus on that this week.

Theme Prompt: #054 - Time Travel (Amnesty 28)
Title: a dance unfinished
Fandom: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey (ft. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga) -
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 (Somewhat vague allusions to burn/corrosive injuries, equally vague allusions to body horror and the rammifications of time travel)
Word Count: 999 words
Author's Note: Yahoo, here I go again with the experimental time stuff and Fawful! This time, an AU time travel butchering of the end of Bowser's Inside Story. Also, I hid a Kingdom Hearts reference in here. I do what I want on that front. (Sidenote I did not wanna do a cliffy but I guess I have to. Darn you, word limit 😭)
(Today's Slay the Princess OST inspiration: here)

Summary: A ten-year-old Fawful is thrown across time and has to face the abject horror of the Dark Star up close and personal - up to and including doubts about his convictions regarding his future evil plans.

Time travel brings Fawful to a horror worse than the Shroobs.. )

Theme Prompt: #274 - Near Death Experience (Amnesty 28)
Title: reminders
Fandom: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey (ft. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team) - AU where Fawful doesn't explode during Bowser's Inside Story.
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 (because of Bowser's potty mouth + kinda poorly implied PTSD from the Dark Bowser fight.)
Word Count: 986 words
Author's Note: Same continuity as Mean Green, just a few years down the line (consider this a precursor to Mario and Luigi: Dream Team in this AU).
Also fun fact I was listening to this during the first half of the fic haha

Summary: Bowser again has trouble with a recurring nightmare about the day he fought Dark Bowser, even after he wakes up, he can't stop thinking about the fact the fight could have ended before it began.

Summary: The Master has a plan to take over a minor galactic empire, but of course the Doctor has to interfere. Only in this case the Master's supposed allies might actually be plotting against him, and the Doctor uses the ball as a distraction to tell the Master what he knows. Surrounded by aliens who want them for dinner, their only hope of escaping is working together.
Warnings: no archive warnings, but discussions of aliens who want to eat them
Characters: The Master (Delgado), Third Doctor
Pairings: Third Doctor/The Master
When I Started: July/2024
How I Lost My Shit: I went with another story for that event and ended up not finishing this.
How I Finished My Shit: This event was the perfect excuse, and being matched with someone who also loves classic who was great for my motivation! These are my favourite idiots, I just needed a little push.

AMNESTY WEEK #028
Challenges # 001-280

Amnesty Weeks are a chance to post any stories you've written that, for whatever reason, weren't submitted during that week's challenge. And if you can't get the entries you want in during this Amnesty, never fear! The next one will include challenges 001-290, so you'll never miss out.

There's no voting for amnesty entries, and there's no limit on how many you can post, so long as each entry meets the usual community requirements (less than 1000 words, not NC-17, etc.) If, however, you manage to end up with 30 of the things you want to post, try to spread them out through the week for the sake of people's reading pages. These entries may also be crossposted and previewed anywhere you like, since there’s no voting to skew.

At the end of this two-week window, a post will be made collecting all the links of the posted entries, which will also signal the end of the posting period, and a new regular challenge will go up.

Entries are titled the same way as normal: [#] Story Title (Fandom)

2025 week 44

larissa: (FFXIII ☄ ⌈Lightning ; into the distance⌋)

late post again because... idk, i spent six hours in the diadem in final fantasy xiv in the past two days, my brain is mush.

anyway, no real updates here. hand still hurts, treatment hasn't worked, continuing to worry that i have surgery in my imminent future. at least presumably then i'd get full use of my hand back, but still, :(. not much i can do about it at this point though.

i really want to play video games, but my hands are only partially cooperating with me. as a result i've been doing really simple tasks in ff14 that don't tax my hands too much, and avoiding any high level combat content. of course all i actually want to do is the latter — i've barely touched the new deep dungeon despite how much i want to play through it, alas. anyway, this is why i've been in the diadem... i might as well do something towards a long-term goal, right...

still reading a lot. this week i've been reading the burning kingdoms trilogy by tasha suri, which is an indian-inspired sapphic fantasy. i'm about 80% through the last book, which i've been struggling with somewhat as the main draw of the series is the dynamic between the two female leads, and they spent a good portion of this book apart. any time they're in the same room the story is much more alive (the sapphic yearning is off the charts) but as a result i've been finding the other parts of the story less interesting. although anything to do with prince rao is generally excellent.

once i finish that i'm hoping to dive back into sci fi, though; i have an original sci fi story concept i'm noodling on and i need some inspiration from contemporary books in the genre, so it's time to read. will probably pull together a reading list tomorrow, since my TBR is mostly fantasy-adjacent right now.

Here are the entries for this challenge:

List of entries )

Please Note: Because we only have 3 entries this week, there is only a First Place and Runner Up to vote for!

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (both spots) in order to be counted. Winner votes are worth 2 points, Runner Up votes are worth 1 point. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Runner Up: 88. Another Fic Title

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. IP addresses are logged to prevent duplicate voting.

Voting closes Wednesday, November 5 at 9:00PM EST.

Project Title: Hope is The Thing With Feathers

Fandom: The Owl House

Link: here on AO3

Summary: It’s only been days since Belos was finally defeated. However, the now-what reconstruction of the Boiling Isles is every bit as terrifying as he and The Collector were, especially when there are those who want the Heroes of the Isles gone for good.

Warnings: canon-typical violence, references to canonical abuse, stabbings, child soldiers, violence against young teens, PSTD, hurt/comfort

Characters: Almost the entire Boiling Isles characters, highlighting Luz Noceda and Hunter

Pairings: Luz Noceda/Amity Blight, Hunter/Willow Park, Edalyn Clawthorne/Raine Whispers

When I Started: May of 2023 soon after the truncated third season aired

How I Lost My Shit: This is two fold. One, I didn’t want easy answers ‘oh hey we won and deposed the emperor and now it’s clear sailing’ but that lead to things getting long and complicated. Secondly, I discovered Hazbin Hotel and it ate my brain whole.

How I Finished My Shit: I determined I needed to finish it for this challenge (which is why it was one of the two I chose) and then I decided which of the plot threads I had to sew up (Hunter’s plight) and which to leave open ended (the fate of the Boiling Isles) figuring I can always write a sequel if I wanted to.

Author's Note: Thanks to AfterIwake for the upcoming cover/chapter art.

Title: Mean Green
Fandom: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey (ft. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Little Shop of Horrors (1986)) - AU where Fawful doesn't explode during Bowser's Inside Story.
Rating/Warnings: PG
Bonus: Yes
Word Count: 933 words
Author's Note: This is based in part on old Tumblr RP stuff - a friend of mine from the M&L RP space really likes LSoH and this is in part inspired by that stuff! Also, because I wanted to do something lighter given my Fan Flashworks thing is kinda sad.
(PATCH NOTES: Now y'all see why I do NOT post so close to a work shift. Thank god I noticed this before I had to clock in! Title has been fixed.

Summary: Almost a full year passes since Fawful's last villainous stunt, and while he is initially stumped on what to do the following Halloween, his first adoptive parent's ghost gives him a particular idea from past the stars and beyond the moon..

Challenge 280:
TRICK OR TREAT
For some people, it’s a beloved childhood tradition, going door to door in costumes (sometimes elaborate, sometimes not) for candy. Other people take the “trick” part much more seriously, spending their Halloween playing pranks on friends, enemies, or anyone who doesn’t provide the promised treat. And many other people didn’t grow up with the tradition at all, and find the whole thing a little strange.

Did your characters trick-or-treat? Would they, if they had the opportunity? Are they in it for the candy, the tricks, or both?

Write a story about a trick – or a treat.

BONUS GOAL: Meow!

If your submission features a cat (or more than one), it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, November 3 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
