Elementary: 7x01 The Further Adventures - Liveblog
Now how's that for a episode title! I thought it was a new show tagline at first, but looking around shows that it is indeed the name of the episode.
I was stoked for the season starting and did catch the episode as it aired. I quickly just kept watching rather than continuing to tweet about things happening.
This is actually from my second viewing of the episode, having watched the available stream from the local television channel. I love closed captioning.
So spoilers will be below.
The recap with Michael brings back so many things I’d repressed and did not enjoy about the last season, namely: Michael. Serial killers continue to be banal and too normal, and downright creepy. (That said, the process of catching them is somewhat fascinating, still.)
A break in?
Clyde! Even a burglar takes a moment to appreciated the tortoise.
221A is where Joan’s staying, right? 221B is Sherlock’s half of the house? I cannot recall. Anyway, what was that saying again? Set a thief to catch a thief? (Or before the Discworld establishment of the theives’ guild: Set a deep hole with spring-loaded sides, tripwires, whirring knife blades driven by water power, broken glass and scorpions, to catch a thief.)
Oh, also – not sure if this is the reference, but I’m reminded of the Holmesian story “The Blue Carbuncle”, where a diamond is hidden in a turkey and accidentally sold. Only six busts though, the thief got lucky, even if I do agree on the assessment that the royal wedding busts were not that great.
Sometimes, getting what you want is knowing one extra fact than anyone else. That is, Sherlock’s reluctance to return the pearl from the person it was stolen from – because criminal associations of said owner. But hey, guess what? The pearl’s a fake and has always been a fake! Who wants a ring of assassination? One owner from new – if you’re interested in the Borgias, that is. (Lucrezia Borgia, not to be confused with the Medici of the same name – daughter of a pope and poisoner – by rumour, of course) Anyway, the ex-mafia boss won’t be getting his pearl back, and I’m not sure who now gets the ring.
It really says something that the line about Americans and guns was thrown in there, about how the world sees the US of A. Not that I think every American knows how to use and operate a gun? Besides basic gun safety? That said, Joan’s also not in law enforcement, she’s just involved in it – and you know she’s more of a nightstick/fisticuffs sort of person, from what we’ve seen.
The world doesn't have the best opinion about Americans in general, sometimes, though the DCI is pushing things further.
Anyway, we did have a callback, wrt to Sherlock’s concussion and related injury. Though yes, I agree that setting that trap was sort of dangerous.
But maybe she doesn’t want to be a dame, Sherlock.
The use of an acid attack leaves a bad taste in my mouth, mostly because it reminds me of other news events that have happened. Sometimes targeted acid attacks, sometimes just some schmuck who decides to throw caustic acids down onto busy streets. Like seriously people!
Politics in crime just isn’t great.
Marcus and Gregson have been busy! Making their connections, building their cases to close in on their suspects…
Is the federal hiring freeze something that is currently going on in the US?
And Marcus is on his last week, or last five days and counting before leaving for the marshalls. Though the cowboy hat… heh.
Gregson is… himself. And that really was a mood killer to him.
Kitty! I do like her purple hair.
Archie is cool, though may I want to know where he got those blocks.
She does have the privilege of more distance than Joan and Sherlock to see how things stand, wrt to Joan’s current situation in London. It’s tough, moving so far away from everyone you know, especially since it’s not just one city, but a whole continent. You don’t get to see the people you’re friends with as easily, family is far off, and for all the ways you can now connect with people, it is an adjustment to go from able to be ‘face to face’ to long distance.
And with some situations too, like with Joan’s mom… though she knows her mother’s got a good support system in place.
Sherlock has a nose I semi-envy. I don’t think I want to be the scent hound he seems to be, because some odors are just unpleasant, but I too would just stand there in the woods, saying dirt, dirt and more dirt if asked for an analysis of what’s in the air. Like maybe there’s rot and loam and different plants but I wouldn’t know where to begin to identify the finer aspects of the mixture
Also no allergies.
I had my suspicions on how Lola Quinn ended up in the bottom of a lift shaft, the first time around, but Occam’s razor applies.
The tabloids are scary business.
Is the mum and son exchange thing common in the UK? I remember it in the 007 films too.
Good thing indeed, Mr. Derek paparazzi guy. That picture saved your arse better than any alibi.
Also the DCI’s (Anthelney Jones) promise from Sherlock is full of loopholes, not sure if she has enough experience dealing with Holmes and Watson, or she just needs it out there.
No approaching Ruby Carville until they had a case? Directed at just them?
Hence Kitty.
More lawyers than all the members of the UK police force, must be a lot of lawyers.
If the queen’s rubbish was really that easy to just make off with, I don’t know. It’s rubbish, after all. Nothing sensitive would be in there, I don’t think.
Poor Kitty, having to deal with the afternoon sugar crash from Archie because Sherlock though 10am ice cream is a good idea.
… that conversation just seems to say that Joan and Sherlock are talking, but not exactly talking.
Marcus KNOWS. It’s definitely dangerous knowledge, knowing what parties would be interested in it, and who took the fall. And he has good advice on how to deal with it too, with Gregson looking at that burning bridge and thinking about how to deal with the flames.
That delivery guy must be so confused at having to drop a letter/package onto the floor. What’s the oddest delivery he’s ever made, I wonder? But they’re just being cautious. Never know what you can slip into an envelope.
… the history of the Carville house makes me glad that I don’t have Sherlock’s nose. But still, no allergies though. ;; Catch 22
Yeah, didn’t see that revelation coming, that Ruby was Lola’s mom by birth. Of course, having money to hide a pregnancy is great, and adoption is done super quick.
Ethics are also… flexible. Though given the suspicion that it was domestic violence/revenge from an ex who would hit his partner, I could see why vengeance is a draw.
They’re having a Conversation! He really wants to share London with Joan. But you know, not everyone takes to displacement like a duck to water. And let's be honest, Joan makes connections differently than Sherlock does.
The idea of reconciliation is there! And they very carefully avoid the subject, because the less said, the better.
The plastic surgery points us back to the doctor that was on Lola’s case.
It’s lovely to see Joan’s medical knowledge at the forefront. Sherlock can handle the odd and esoteric, but this would be firmly in her wheelhouse.
Blepharoplasty vs rhinoplasty, was this guy overworked? Or had he made an assumption about what was supposed to be done?
Of course, it’s all circumstantial until they realized the fingerprint found on the dump site of the getaway vehicle was a full print due to acid burn injury.
Acids – handle with gloves, goggles, and other protective coverings! If you get some on yourself, rinse with copious amounts of cold water for 10 – 15 minutes.
Yeah, Joan admits to needing an adjustment period. After all, she have to make new connections again,
especially since there’s no one to readily call up and meet out. Like with Emily, or hm, maybe even Ms. Hudson.
Though I sort of roll my eyes at Chip being sweet on her, it’s cute? H seems kind of young though. However, the flowers are much appreciated.
You know, that phone call with Gregson’s name, you wouldn’t think its him starting the conversation, and you’re glad that Sherlock answers, but nope.
No.
It’s worse.
Gregson got shot?
And that’s the end?
Orz
All in all, I want to see how they get around the Sherlock's banishment from the states since there's stuff going down in NYC that he probably also wants to be there for. Joan may be able to act as a go between, but that difference in being there, and actually, PHYSICALLY being there once again rears its head.
I don't know if the cast and crew are pulling out all the stops for this final final season, though I hope so. Except not in ways that make it seem over the top. That would be too much.
The case while central in holding the plot together, isn't as important as all the conversations we get in between, and that has pretty much always been the way this show works. I like those conversations, I would love to see more of them, the emotional arcs is what they show is best at, and it can always do more to play to its strengths.
I love the return of Ophelia Lovibond as Kitty, I would definitely love to see more of Archie, if that was included in the cards, and subsequently, Kitty. Though who else might may a reappearance? I have no clue.
