Nothing felt quite as real when Mal was around. That's because she wasn't. Isn't.

There was never a Mallorie Miles, let alone a real person she was based on. What she is, is a guide - a goal-driven fragment of personality.

Guides were created within Project Morpheus, when dreamers were trapped but couldn't (wouldn't) find they way back. They had to be so overwhelmingly real that there was no way to hold the dream together, functioning as an internal wake up call much like a kick.
